Elopements

Eloping removes the guests, not the law

The romance of eloping is that nothing else has to be arranged. The catch is that the one thing that does — the legal ceremony — is exactly as demanding for two people as it is for a hundred and forty.

What it takes

The paperwork does not scale down

Greece charges €18 and wants a week's notice whether you are two or two hundred. Italy still wants your consulate to issue a nulla osta inside Italy. France still wants thirty to forty days in the commune. The country guides are written for exactly this — they are the part of an elopement that actually needs planning.

Portugal is usually the answer

No residency test, any conservatória, and the lowest total cost of the five countries covered here. If the legal ceremony has to happen at the destination and you have no interest in spending six weeks there, that is where to start.

A small day still has a budget

Two flights, a celebrant, a photographer, somewhere to eat afterwards, and the document costs nobody warns you about. Ten categories with planned against paid, and the receipts filed against the line they belong to.

Twelve people still need telling where to be

A micro wedding is not a private one. The website carries the date, the address and the travel, and the RSVP writes into the guest list — which for twelve people is genuinely faster than a group chat that scrolls.

The free plan is usually enough

Unlimited guests, the checklist, the budget, one website theme, one seating plan and 20 registry items, at no cost. An elopement rarely needs auto-arrange or a second floor plan, which is most of what Premium is for.

Common questions

Is eloping abroad easier than a destination wedding?

Socially, yes. Legally, no — the licence, notice period, apostille and residency rules are identical regardless of how many people watch. The difference is that there is no planner, no venue coordinator and no one else chasing the documents.

Which country is easiest to elope to?

Portugal: no residency requirement, any registry office in the country, and the cheapest of the five to make legal. Greece is a close second at €18 and one week's notice, once your documents are apostilled and translated.

Do we need Elos for an elopement?

For the paperwork, the guides are the useful half and they are free to read. For the day, the free plan carries the budget, the checklist, a website with RSVP and a guest list — which is generally the whole of a twelve-person wedding.

What is the difference between an elopement and a micro wedding?

Only the guest count, and nobody agrees on where the line is. Planning-wise they are the same exercise: one legal ceremony, one small budget, and a handful of people who need a date, an address and a flight.

Guide

Where is it easiest to marry in Europe?

Portugal takes tourists. Spain wants two years' residency. France wants forty days. Greece wants €18 and a week's notice. The honest comparison.

Guide

Getting married in Portugal as a tourist

No residency requirement, any registry office, and you can arrive as a tourist. The conservatória process end to end, and the 4–6 weeks that matter.

Guide

Getting married in Greece as a non-resident

Greece has no residency requirement for a civil wedding. The actual paperwork sequence: which documents, apostilled or not, the €18 fee, the timings.

Destination

Santorini

Caldera venues cap at 24–30 guests, the licence is €18, and September has the warmest sea. What a Santorini wedding costs, holds, and asks of your guests.

Destination

The Douro Valley

Terraced vineyards, Portugal's cost base, and September for the harvest. What a Douro Valley wedding costs — and why inland summers are hotter than the coast.

Destination

Sicily

Taormina runs about a third below Lake Como at the same quality, and western Sicily lower again. What a Sicilian wedding costs, and when to go.
