When to marry in Portugal: the warmest autumn in Europe

The sweet spot is autumn

Peak season runs June to September, with April–May and October the best value. But the window most local planners name as the genuine sweet spot is September into October — the warmest autumn in Europe, with the summer crowds gone and venues fully available.

The Algarve gets more than three hundred sunny days a year, which is not marketing copy so much as a description of why the season is long. June is the most popular single month for weddings there: warm without being punishing, and the longest days of the year.

The Atlantic changes the north

The Atlantic is the thing that surprises people. Portugal is not the Mediterranean: the sea is cooler, the wind is a genuine factor on exposed coastline, and evenings drop further than the daytime temperature suggests. A cliff-top ceremony in the Algarve is windier than the photographs imply, and guests should be told to bring something for after dark.

What to avoid

• August, mildly — Hot and busy, and the Algarve fills with holidaymakers — but Portugal does not shut down the way France and Italy do, so it is a lesser problem here than there.
• Deep winter — November to February is genuinely wet, particularly in the north. Portugal's season is long, not endless.
• Assuming Sintra behaves like Lisbon — It does not. It has its own microclimate, and mist is a feature rather than a risk.

Booking

Nine to twelve months is generally workable, which is materially easier than Italy or the Spanish islands — the long season spreads demand across more dates. Peak Algarve weekends in June and September are the exception, and the best quintas take those twelve to eighteen months out.
