Why it is cheaper, and why that is not a warning
The gap is not quality. Portugal has the same standard of catering, photography and floristry as its neighbours; what it does not have is Lake Como's or the Amalfi Coast's brand premium, and its domestic cost base is lower. You are not buying less wedding — you are not buying the address.
The practical effect is that the money goes somewhere else. Couples who move a planned Italian wedding to Portugal generally do one of three things with the difference: invite thirty more people, add a second day, or simply keep it.
Where Portuguese weddings still cost real money
- Peak Algarve weekends — June and September at the best quintas are internationally contested, and priced that way.
- Getting guests there — Faro is well served in summer and less so in the shoulder months. Lisbon is a longer transfer than it looks on a map.
- Imported suppliers — As everywhere, flying in a photographer means their travel and accommodation on top — and Portugal's local talent is genuinely strong, so the case for it is weak.
- The document file — €500–€1,500 for apostilles, certified translations and registry fees. Small, and the one line you cannot avoid or hurry.
