When to marry on Santorini: a month-by-month read on weather, wind and crowds
Santorini's wedding season runs roughly from late April to late October, and the two ends of it are better than the middle. That is the whole guide in one sentence; the rest is why, and what it costs you either way.
The short answer
Ask experienced planners on the island and you will hear the same two windows: May into early June, and September into mid-October. Warm but not punishing, sea warm enough to swim, the meltemi mostly quiet, and an island that has not yet — or has just stopped — filling to capacity. Venue rates in these windows are frequently lower than in peak, and the vendors you actually want are still available.
July and August are the months couples pick because they are the school holidays, and they are the hardest months to get married here well: 30–35°C, the largest crowds of the year, the highest prices, and the least vendor availability.

The meltemi
The meltemi is a dry northerly wind that blows across the Aegean in summer, strongest from July through August. On Santorini it is not an occasional event — it is a feature of the season, and the caldera edge is exactly where you feel it.
For a wedding it means specific things: loose florals and lightweight decor need building for wind, veils behave unpredictably, paper stationery on outdoor tables needs weighting, and hair that was planned in a calm room will not survive the terrace. It also affects ferries, which is worth knowing if guests are island-hopping to reach you.
May and the late-September-to-mid-October window are the periods with the least meltemi activity, which is a substantial and under-discussed part of why they are the recommended ones.
Crowds, and what they do to your photographs
Santorini receives an enormous volume of cruise passengers, concentrated in the middle of the day and heavily in peak season. Oia at sunset in August is not a quiet village; it is a crowd several rows deep along the castle walls.
This is a genuine planning input rather than an aesthetic complaint. It affects how long it takes to move a wedding party between locations, whether the blue-domed backdrop you chose is reachable, and how much of your photographer's time is spent waiting for a gap in strangers. Shoulder-season couples get noticeably more of the island to themselves, and it shows in the pictures.
How far ahead to book
- Peak, June to September — twelve to eighteen months ahead for a venue you actually chose rather than one that happened to be free.
- Shoulder, May and October — six to twelve months is usually workable, and you will have real choice.
- The best photographers, either season — book earliest of any supplier. If a specific photographer matters more than a specific date, approach them first and build the date around their availability.
