Budget

What a wedding in France costs in 2027

France sits between Italy's lakes and Portugal on price — cheaper than Lake Como, dearer than the Algarve — with one budget line the other countries do not have.

The entry point

A budget of roughly €25,000 to €50,000 is the band at which Provence and private villa or château venues genuinely open up. Below it you are looking at restaurants, small domaines and shorter guest lists — perfectly good weddings, but not the château buyout most people picture.

Above it, France scales the way Italy does: the ceiling is set by how exclusive and how famous the property is, not by the food or the flowers.

The line nobody budgets for

The upside: because the ceremony is symbolic, it can be anywhere, at any time, in any language, with anything you like in it. Couples who resent the constraint often end up preferring the result.

Where French weddings get expensive

  • Château exclusivity — The gap between hiring a venue and buying out a property for a weekend is the largest single decision in a French budget, and the second is usually double the first.
  • Multi-day is the norm — French château weddings are frequently three-day affairs — welcome dinner, wedding, recovery brunch. Lovely, and it triples the catering.
  • Wine, at the venue's list — You are in a wine country and corkage rules vary enormously. Whether you can bring your own is worth asking before booking, not after.
  • Getting there — Provence is inland. Guests fly to Marseille, Nice or Avignon and then need cars or coaches. Budget transfers, and tell guests early.

Where it is better value than expected

  • Food and wine, per euro — France's floor for catering quality is high. The difference between a mid-range and a top-end French caterer is smaller than the price gap suggests.
  • May and October — The value months, and arguably the better weather bet than August anyway.
  • Smaller domaines — Provence is full of family-run estates that are not on the international planner circuit and are priced accordingly.

Common questions

How much does a wedding in France cost?

Roughly €25,000–€50,000 is the band at which Provence and private château or villa venues open up. Below that you are looking at restaurants, small domaines and shorter guest lists; above it, the ceiling is set by exclusivity rather than by food and flowers.

Is France more expensive than Italy for a wedding?

It sits between Italy's regions. Cheaper than Lake Como at the top end, comparable to much of the rest of Italy, and meaningfully dearer than Portugal — which runs roughly 30–40% below both France and Italy.

Does the residency rule cost us money?

A little. Because most foreign couples cannot marry legally in France, they marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in France — which means paying a celebrant, typically a few hundred to around a thousand euros for a good bilingual one, on top of a cheap registry office appointment at home.

Why are French weddings often three days?

Château venues are usually hired for a weekend rather than a day, so a welcome dinner and a Sunday brunch come almost free of venue cost — but not of catering cost, which is the line that multiplies by guests and by meals.
